Bonus #2: How to Use the Drill Vault at Home

For Parents: Practical Strategies to Support Your Athlete’s Growth

The Drill Vault was designed to give athletes access to meaningful, skill-building drills they can do from anywhere—no field, team, or equipment required. Whether you're working with a backyard, driveway, or living room, this resource helps you turn small spaces into powerful training grounds.

Here’s how to get the most out of it:

1. Create a Simple Setup

You don’t need a professional facility to see results. A small, safe space and a few basic tools are all it takes.

  • Space: 10–15 yards of open area
  • Equipment: A football, 4–6 cones (or stand-ins like water bottles or shoes), and a flag belt if available
  • Surface: Grass, turf, or any flat area
  • Marking a starting line and finish line helps bring structure and focus to each drill.

2. Choose 3 to 4 Drills Per Session

Each training session should last around 20–30 minutes. Start by selecting one drill from each key area:

  • Offense: Quarterback or wide receiver-specific drills
  • Defense: Flag pulling or movement-based defensive drills
  • Flag Evasion: Focused on agility and body control
  • Competitive or Reaction Game: Finish with something fun and fast-paced

Example Session:

  • Hip Drop Progressions
  • Receiver Line Catches
  • Partner Flag Pull Progression
  • Cone Flip Relay (join in with them if possible)

3. Emphasize Quality Over Speed

The goal is not how quickly drills are completed, but how well they’re executed. Encourage your athlete to:

  • Repeat each drill 4–5 times with control
  • Watch a short video from the Vault before beginning
  • Start slow, then gradually increase intensity
  • End each session with a competitive element or challenge

4. Keep It Competitive and Engaging

Building internal drive starts with making training enjoyable. Use challenges to spark motivation:

  • Count clean flag pulls or consecutive catches
  • Time each drill and track personal records
  • Create parent vs. athlete reaction games
  • Offer small incentives for effort or consistency

5. Track Progress Together

Use a whiteboard or notebook to record:

  • Drill names and number of reps completed
  • Weekly goals and improvements
  • Personal bests or new skills mastered

This reinforces growth and provides visual proof of progress—an essential motivator for young athletes.

6. Foster Leadership and Accountability

Before each session, ask:

  • “What is your focus today?”

After each session, follow up with:

  • “What did you learn or improve?”

This reflection helps athletes take ownership of their development and builds confidence and mental toughness.

7. Stay Consistent

Improvement comes through repetition. Focus on small wins and consistent effort.

  • Two to three 20–30 minute sessions per week is ideal
  • Choose one focus skill from the Drill Vault each week
  • Celebrate progress over perfection

Your Role as a Parent

You don’t have to know every drill—that’s what the Drill Vault provides. Your job is to:

  • Encourage
  • Observe
  • Film
  • Hold them accountable

The Drill Vault provides the how. You provide the why.

A Final Tip

Record short clips of training sessions. This allows your athlete to review their progress and gives you a way to celebrate their hard work.

Success comes from the quiet reps when no one’s watching. The Drill Vault helps your athlete put in that work—and win the moments that matter.

About Coach Dakota

My Story

Growing up, I never had the opportunity to play football. The only chance I got was in the backyard with my dad. In high school, I looked forward to our annual powder puff game—a single night where we were coached by senior football players. It was the highlight of my high school career, but outside of that, there were no real opportunities for girls to play.

When I got to college, I discovered coed intramural flag football and instantly fell in love with the game. That passion led me to an incredible opportunity to try out and play professionally in women’s flag football. I seized the chance and never looked back. After years of competing at the highest level, I transitioned into coaching, leading Sequoyah High School’s inaugural flag football team. Thanks to Arthur Blank and the Atlanta Falcons, flag football was introduced to high schools across Georgia, giving countless girls their first real chance to play.

After coaching for a few years, I took a step back to focus on my biggest role yet—being a mom to my daughter. Fast forward, and now both my daughter and the sport of flag football have grown tremendously. The most incredible part? She now has the opportunity I never had. She can start playing at four years old, continue through high school, and even pursue the game at the collegiate level or in the Olympics. The game has evolved, and girls now have real opportunities to play, compete, and excel.

I founded DH Flag Football Academy to create even more opportunities for girls to learn and master the game at a high level. If this academy helps just one girl make her school team or inspires her to chase her dreams, then it's all worth it. Seeing the girls I once coached now playing at the collegiate level—and even stepping into coaching roles themselves—is the most rewarding part of my journey.

Football has always been bigger than just the game. I was fortunate to have coaches who shaped me as both a player and a person, and now, I’m honored to pass the torch to the next generation.
